A close friend just had a baby C-section. her husband shot 20 pictures of the birth. They are amazing and very well done. He gave me copies to burn a slide show for him to share. Well as you would expect there are some naked pictures of the baby freshly born. Can I get in trouble for this type of naked baby picture. not sure how far the child protection laws go.

thanks

Buying cameras from Ebay...

Has anyone had a problem with this?

I used to do photography for a small weekly newspaper, and I've been wanting to get my own set up for a while now. More for my own enjoyment than anything.

I already know what I want. A Canon Rebel. Now I'm just trying to find the best price.

I figured a new camera with two decent lenses, an 18-55 and 75-300, decent flash, 8 gig memory card, and an extra battery would cost me around $1,500. But I went on Ebay and found a set-up for $900.

The flash looks kinda cheap, but everything else seems good.

The package is here: http://cgi.ebay.com/CANON-EOS-Digital-Rebel-XTi-400D-3-LENS-8GB-FREE-SHIP_W0QQitemZ110258426743QQihZ001QQcategoryZ147173QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153.l1262

Anyone care to take a quick look and let me know what they think?

I'd also like to hear from anyone who's used Ebay for this. I've bought a few things off Ebay, but I'm a bit leery to purchase an expensive SLR off of it. Maybe it's just nerves though, my girlfriend's dad bought a mustang on the Internet and it's in great condition.

photographers being harrassed by police

This is a growing trend across the country, be aware:

Runnin' Scared
The NYPD Harasses a Photographer at Coney Island
www.villagevoice.com/news/08...5,2.html

-------------------------------------------
Runnin' Scared
The NYPD Harasses a Photographer at Coney Island
It's not the first case of illegal censorship by a department that says "shoot first, hand over film later"
by Sean Gardiner
June 10th, 2008 12:00 AM

Manhattan commercial photographer Simon Lund loves Coney Island so much that he treks out there 10 to 20 times each summer to take pictures. But it was only on his latest venture that Lund encountered something he'd never experienced in all his trips there over the years: an unwanted photo editor from the NYPD.

As if he were in a police state, Lund was intimidated by a cop into giving up his film, even though he was doing nothing wrong and wasn't formally accused of anything.

The upshot is that "the police had no right to get involved—none," says Todd Maisel, vice president of the New York Press Photographers Association.

Under the law, Lund was allowed to take a photo of anyone in public. If he intended to use the picture commercially, he'd have to get a signed release.

Maisel, a shooter for the Daily News, says news photogs get into occasional scrapes with police, but most know never to give up their film. However, he says he can see how a commercial photographer might be more easily intimidated by the NYPD.

NYPD officials declined to comment for this story, but several allegations of the cops' heavy-handed behavior toward photographers have been documented. The NYCLU has filed several lawsuits against the NYPD, accusing them of violating First Amendment rights in its harassment of photographers. One of the suits, Sharma v. NYPD, was filed in January 2006, when Indian filmmaker Rakesh Sharma, who was shooting taxis in midtown, was stopped by police and detained for several hours, during which he was quizzed about "terrorist" activities. That August, the suit was expanded at the NYCLU's request to include a slew of photographers.

"Photographers and filmmakers have been unlawfully detained, searched, and threatened with arrest if they would not disclose or destroy their film," the Sharma suit contends, adding that the harassment, ominously, doesn't always end there. "Photographers have also been subjected to a second round of questioning by members of the NYPD's Intelligence Division," the suit alleges.

The department also may be keeping close track of which photographers it harasses. The suit accuses the NYPD of maintaining a database that includes the identities of everyone "investigated for photography . . . regardless of the outcome of the investigation."

If that's the case, then Simon Lund is on the list.

His troubles started when he was with his wife, Jano, clicking away at Coney Island on Memorial Day. A woman approached him and accused him of taking pictures of her young son. Lund says that if he did, he was unaware of it; he recalls that he was shooting the rides. In any event, Lund knew that it's legal to take pictures of people, even kids, in public. (For later commercial use, photographers have to get releases from the children's parents.)

The woman told him to accompany her while she found a cop. She insisted that Lund erase the picture, but Lund was using a film camera, not a digital one, and thus couldn't erase individual shots. Nevertheless, he says, he willingly followed her over to a group of police officers congregating on the boardwalk. "I just wanted to sort it out, because I knew it was fine to take pictures in public," he says.

A cop whom Lund couldn't fully identify, however, didn't see it that way. Lund says the cop asked him and his wife if they had children. When they said no, the officer said: "If you did, you'd understand why she is so upset." The woman was joined by other family members, and soon they were all yelling at the police to make Lund hand over his film.

"It was starting to get uglier and uglier," says Lund. "The mother of the child was getting really hostile: 'Why isn't he destroying it? How can he take pictures of my child?' "

Lund says the cop then leaned over to him and said: "You should destroy your film right now, or give it to her. You've got to give up your film, or things are going to get much worse for you."

"I knew at that point I could fight it," says Lund. "I knew I was right." But he recalls that he didn't want to find out what the cop meant by things getting "much worse for you."

So he gave the film and a business card to a friend of the woman's. "The cop didn't exactly say, 'I'm going to take you to jail,' " says Lund, "but basically, he didn't leave me any other choice."

Lund asked that the woman develop the photos, remove any pictures of her son, and please return the rest of the photographs to him. He hasn't heard from her since. He says he plans to file a complaint with the Civilian Complaint Review Board.

"We're quite confident that the NYPD has told its police officers, in one way or another, that they should be paying very, very close attention to photographers," says Christopher Dunn, the NYCLU's associate legal director. "But they haven't been given clear directions on the limits in which they have to conduct those investigations. Police officers are not allowed to look at images without consent of the photographer, and they have no authority to order someone to let them look at their pictures or to confiscate their film. And it happens all the time."

Officials at the CCRB and the NYCLU say that complaints about the police approaching people taking pictures and either demanding to see their photos or seizing and destroying them have been on the rise ever since 9/11.

Dunn says this particular case offers the "wrinkle" of Lund willingly approaching the cops instead of the cops approaching him. "But the outcome is the same," he adds: "Someone's film is disappearing."

Stupid elements question

I had a picture I wanted to use for an LJ icon, which has a 100x100 pixel limit. Cropping it was easy enough, but I couldn't figure out how to re-size the larger image down to 100x100. The menu marked resize never gave me a pixel option, and never affected the image as it appeared on the screen - I suspect it was only referring to the printed image.

I finally went back to the Photoshop 5 LE that I still have, and resized it in approximately 3 seconds.

In any case, was this a case of the 3am stupids? Or is what I'm trying to do either not possible in Elements - or just hidden well?

There is this home-business photography program that has been around for a while. Essentially it's about getting photo assignments from insurance companies and such. It sounds reasonable to me, but I am wondering whether anyone here has actually tried it and has gotten any assignments...

I have seen Capture One on Apple compared to Canon's Digital Professional tethered to a laptop it was impressive.

Who has used both Adobe Lightroom and Capture One on Apple from Canon 5D?

I am not interested in hearing opinions about PC, or Nikon users cause that is not the gear I'm using so it would not apply to me.

I am taking pictures (no pay just volunteer) for a car show in a couple of weeks. I offered to burn them to a slide show with music for the club. They are now talking about selling them as a fund raiser for the non profit they are going to donate to.

so I am wondering since they now have a price, do I need to get releases form the people I photograph to use their image?

admission is free they do have to pay a registration fee to enter their car.

Last year Kodak announced a breakthrough technology that would allow improved low light photography.

The technology is now beginning to emerge in their Z1085 IS camera, which can shoot at ISO 8000, with pictures shot at 6400 and above only at 3megapixels. But to be able to shoot ISO 3200 at 10 megapixels is awesome.

I have not been able to find any reviews of the camera yet. Does anyone have any knowledge about this camera??

What are your views / suggestions on posing your subjects: do you, how do you, what works / doesn't work; good experiences / bad experiences ...
iMac Glossy Monitors?

I'm thinking about buying a new 24" iMac, but am worried about the glossy screen. Specifically, while the new glossy monitors display beautiful, vibrant colors; I'm worried that when I send out my pics to the lab they will be much less vibrant. I had one kid at the Apple store tell me that yes, my prints would be 'duller/darker' than the glossy screen. But the another kid working there said that the matte screens make the pics look duller, and therefore the prints would come out 'brighter'. Anyone have any first had experience using Photoshop and printing from these glossy monitors?

I'm hoping one of you has figured this out, since all of my scouring the internet and the help is coming up blank.

at work, I recently got a very large monitor. I don't have Photoshop filling the entire screen, and I like moving the window around. However, when I try to move the program to a different part of the screen, the Palettes stay where they are,

Is there a way to "lock" the palettes to the workspace, so that when I move the program around, the palettes go with it?

Hi, got my new, 1st digital camera. And I finally found the on button. Thanks for all the guidance y'all gave me. Now a question. My old Olympus had a standard leather strap, and I also would use a chest harness. I was supremely confident that it was safe. Never dropped it. The new cam has a single strap mount on the side, and the strap is a nylon chord with a tinier little loop that goes thru the mount. Makes me nervous. Just how safe is this kind of strap-mount? Is there something that I can do, to make it safer? Thanks, Marc.

Greetings!

I'm looking for software suggestions to do basic color/brightness/contrast editing of a lot of photos a at once. I have Photoshop 7 whch is great, but I'm looking for something else. I do club/event photogography and generate 1100-1500 photos in a night, so batch processing is a must. I just found Gary Fong's Bullzey 4 software and it seems like the ticket, but I would like more info. Is there any other software packages out there that do the basics? Anybody have experience with Bullzey?

Thanks in advance!

Hi all. I'm looking for my 1st digtal camera. My film SLR is an Olympus OM1. Small and compact, good for backpacking. Doesn't do much but take good pictures. Has extreme macro, and a wide aperture.

In the digital, my 1st importance would be (I believe it's called) "aperture priority." I'm not ready to spend $800-$1000 on an SLR, but I want to be able to take good pics. I could start right now up to $300-$400, though I wouldn't object to paying less. I'm about to hit a few stores to get some hands on, and it would help if I new what to look for. Thanks, Way.

Art in action book check it out

Hi everyone,
My work is featured in this awesome book, Buy yours today $45 +tax SH from www.joemangrum.com and get a signed copy (personalized if you include your name etc. Its a very timely topic , climate change, funny how nobody is asking about it to our presidential hopefuls??
lets get the word out on climate change!

heres the details

In the environmental realm, science and art are inextricably linked. While science determines how we measure the health of our planet, art allows us to visualize our relationship to the natural world. Art in Action collects creative interpretations of the state of out planet in word and image by seventy-nine artists. These varied pieces express a profound appreciation for all species and landscapes, explore our natural world lost, despaired and reconstructed and describe the fantasy of paradises anew and gone awry.

From the expansive vision of Christo to the enlightened power of Olafur Eliasson, the art speaks to us in as many ways as there are artists. Each chapter asks us to celebrate, reflect, interact, protect and act, demonstrating the vast and rich web of life and the interconnectedness of it all. No book can change the natural world. But these stories and photographs can build awareness, the first critical step in changing our collective story from one that exploits and destroys nature for the benefit of humankind to one that nurtures and values the natural world.

Mia Hanak is the Founding Executive Director of the Natural World Museum, an organization committed to inspiring sustainable culture through the arts in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). She leads the team that produces the innovative Art for the Environment global exhibition series. She has been nominated by the American Association of Museums as a ?Museum Leader for the Next Generation.? She currently resides in San Francisco.

Randy Rosenberg is an artist and has also curated many art collections for international organizations including The World Bank, the International Finance Corporation and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Her traveling exhibitions include: The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama and Envisioning Change; Attitudinal and Climate.

Bush Admin Plan to Require Fees to Photograph National Parks

PHOTOGRAPHERS--STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS!

READ THIS:
Fees proposed for photographing public lands:
www.seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/...3.html

AND THEN READ THIS:

Photographers did nothing while, local and state beaches, and cities, decided
to write new ordinances that made photographers cash-cows to the government.
I suggest photographers do something now, before it's too late.

Problem:
Define "commercial". By letting local landmanagers be responsible for implementation and enforcement, there will
be mistakes, over-zelous rangers citing people when they probably shouldn’t–it happens. I liken this to what
happend at local state and city beaches, if the rangers or officers catch someone with a really nice camera they
will probably ask you to leave or cite you. They just can’t tell who is who when it comes to photography. With the
advent of cheap digital SLRs, just about everyone looks like a professional. What really sucks is the fees, they
will be straight across the board expensive, and have insurance requirements too. So wether you are a newbie
wanting to take a picture to sell a few postcards at the local gift shop or wanting to do stock photography (with
no guarantee of income), it will COST YOU…. Even if it’s personal, you will get hassled, because you look
“professional.”

The photo-journalist are worried about how it affects their news reporting of non-breaking news. I think that
freelance photographers and advanced hobbyists should be the ones really worrried–they are the biggest cash cow,
because there are more of them.

I would suggest everyone that has a camera voice out against permit requirements for photography. It simply does
not require the large crews that the film industry requires and all the strings attached to it. Photography permits
are just a cash cow to the government, and it’s time ALL photographers voice out against being victimized by our
government. We are NOT wallets to be tapped at whim. Some suggest we be taxed reasonably like fisherman or hunters.
But even that is soooo ridiculous, we are being taxed for photographing nature, without exhausting its resources.
It is a sad, sad day when we are nothing more than wallets to our government.

Voice out, you can write to the department of interior individually or as a group…
www.doi.gov/contact.html

DO SOMETHING…

Fact:
Anyone who enters a national park is already paying an entrance fee.

City beaches already have photography permit requirements in the tripple digits, as well as
insurace requirements in the million dollar category. The same thing can be expected to happen now at National
parks unless photographers unite and do something.

This basically walls out small and independent shooters from
even attempting anything entrepreneurial. (commentary: I guess only rich people can have their portraits taken at
the beach by rich photographers--so much for equality).

Color or B&W in digital photography

I noticed something in the past 4+ years that I've been exclusively digital; I get better black and white with digital photography, especially combined with image editing software, than I feel I did when I shot traditional B&W, but here's the thing- Being able to have both a color and Black and white file of the same image and comparing them side by side, even with better B&W, I seem to prefer the color over the black and white, maybe because I feel the digital color is better than or at least different from film. What I've been finding is that my one-time prefence for monochrome over color has completely shifted with digital. Do others on here also find the same thing? That digital color has added so much that the desire for Black and white images have faded? Have you noticed the same thing happening to you?

I have a Canon Powershot A640 and my memory card is a sandisk ultra 2 1gb. Sometimes when im snapping away and then i go to scroll through my pics it says "unidentified image" with this annoying yellow ? . its really driving my crazy because i see the pic in the 2 sec review and im stoked that i got a good shot and then oh wait no you didnt!!! it does it with a fresh batteries, and sometimes the card only has a few pics on it.
i have the setting on continuous shooting. It does it inside, outside, in brightness, in darkness i really cant pinpoint the problem.

Any suggestions?

Is this an appropriate card for this camera?

Holiday photo contest...

Hello... I'm Plaid, and I'm shiny new to this group (though I've been lurking for awhile)... a recovering photo journalist who's still adjusting to this whole digital (camera) thing (photoshop is already my friend).

Anyway... we have a photo contest at work (AVN, Adult Video News magazine), and (without sounding too spam-y) I thought some of you might be interested in it. It's a holiday "hottie" contest, so we're looking for sexy Santas... though sexy can mean whatever you want it to mean...

http://www.avncontest.com

Let me know if you have any questions, know of a more appropriate way to let people know about this thing, or think I'm crazy to want Canon to make the A-1 again... but digital (all these new bells and whistles are taking some getting used to).

I have taken few pictures using Cannon powershot digital camera from the top of CN tower in Canada during the evening time around 8:00PM by then it was almost dark but the city itself was looking beautiful lit up with all lights. I took the picture of the city but it didn't come out well. I am wondering if anyone knows how to take a night time picture of a city using digital camera.

Butter fly conservatory - Niagara Falls Canada

Butter fly conservatory in Canada is a cool place to visit. If you have children then it is a must place to visit. You get to see diffrent types of butter flies with so many color types. You see them flying all around you and sitting on your shoulders, hands etc. My kids enjoyed a lot and I had a hard time getting them out of that place. I tried to upload the picture from Butter fly conservatory but I got the error message "The maximum size for a photo is 500KB." I am not sure how to cut down the size of the picture that I am trying to upload. Any help is appreciated.

One of the things I'm going to want after I get my digital SLR (and sorta want right now with my Lumix TZ-3) is a way of offloading pictures from the card, and burning them to a CD or DVD. Also possibly editing them, although I'll admit, if I didn't get the picture right in the camera, I'm likely not going to especially want to bother.

Anyway, I'm not specifically looking for a laptop recommendation, except that I totally am. More reasonably I'm wondering what elements you'd look for in a laptop, what software and what OS y'all are using.

I mean, besides some variant of Mac. Not that I have anything against Apple, but they tend to be at the higher end of the price spectrum, and I'm not sure if I need all that it comes with. I don't really want to duplicate (or exceed) my home system; I'm looking for a tool, more than anything else.

So...suggestions welcomed. Thanks.

Prints?

Hello
Tell me where you go and how you get prints.
Online? Store?
Do you size them first?

Mostly I print my digital photos at work, $65,000 laser printer...
but I want to get some real photographs this time.
I want to get some large size prints as well.

How does it work?
Can you recommend a good place?

What's the deal with sizing for prints?
Is the rule never go bigger than the size the original photo was taken in?
My camera saves everything in 72 dpi, can I switch it 300 dpi and go smaller for a print?

Hey experts, tell me stuff.
Thanks!
LCD or CRT?

For post production and development of digital images, where color & levels accuracy matters, LCD or CRT?

Several of the LCD's I've used have some annoying characteristics that make setting levels a bit of a poke in the fog. If your not within a few degrees of zero on viewing angle, there's a noticeable difference in contrast, even on new displays.
but it is only 8mp

where as i am also looking at the canon powershot A650 IS
which has a few trade offs
but is a 12 mp ..

should i care ?

i do want to have great large prints ..

but the S5 IS
has stereo
o cm macro
& a better built casing
etc .. etc ..
i would buy it in a sec if i wasn't wondering about megapixels

i had a 7.1 before
& had hoped to max out mp capacities in new camera ..

I think I made a BIG mistake. I went to Wallgreens to get one of my pictures printed. I had it on CD. It went very well they did an excellent job. However when I got home I thought hmmm I think I will get dca123 printed too and the machine said you could upload from home and pick up so I went into their site and read the disclaimer. Ok here is my mess up at the store the young clerk was helping us with the machine and hit I accept before I even looked at it. I know all routine to him... at home I read what I accept ment and now am going ohhh no. what do you think?

Low Light Noise: Canon Powershot SD 700 IS vs SD 850 IS

Does anyone know how the Canon Powershot SD 700 IS (a.k.a. Ixus 800 IS) compares to the Powershot SD 850 IS (a.k.a. Ixus 950 IS) as far as noise in low light shots is concerned? Normally, I check out dpreview, because they photograph the same objects for each test, so it's easy to compare. Unfortunately, they didn't review the SD 850 IS. Does anyone know of similar sites which I can check out? Can anyone relate their personal experience and/or point me in the direction of reviews that directly compare the noise level between these two cameras?
Thanks!

I took a pic of a lovely young Asian woman wearing a white kimono and body painted bright red near the Man on Friday after the storm. I didn't have any model releases with me at the time and I no brained and totally forgot to get her information. I need to contact her about using the photo in a project I am working on.

I would also like to make sure I can get her a large copy of the photo either way.

Here's a link to the pic.... http://people.tribe.net/be1cda61-4bfb-4c4e-83c7-ecbd7bbce01d/blog/71b00b16-c19d-40d4-b3d1-39113b7e42c8

Any help with her identity and contact info would be greatly appreciated.

Leica D-Lux 3?

Does anyone have experience with this camera? I have a Canon 10D and a Nikon 7900, and thinking about getting the Leica as my 'walk around with' camera. The Canon's a brick and is too heavy to carry all day, and I'm looking for something with better picture quality than the Nikon. I can't complain much about the Nikon tho -- for it's size it's quite good.

Anyone used the Leica? Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I was promised a new digital camera for Christmas but I still need to pick it out. I want to take better photograhs and want something that has wide angle as well as close up and portraits but not too bulky. I've been using a Canon s-400 and think I could do better. It's not acutally my camera but my DH's and I've taken it over, maybe that is why he is offering to get me another? We are in NYC so can go to B&H or that place downtown. Please advise and recommend.

I need a book or something as well to upgrade my skills.

thanks!

America at Home, Sept 17-23

I just got a newsletter from IKEA featuring this future book and it's asking for YOUR shots of Home:

http://www.myamericaathome.com/

Some text from website:

No Place Like Your Home? Show Us.
The co-creator of the best-selling A Day in the Life and America 24/7 book series invites you to participate in America at Home, a nationwide photo project, September 17 to 23, 2007. For seven days, everyone in America is invited to join 100 of the nation's leading photojournalists to capture "the emotions of home." The goal of the project is to capture the extraordinary diversity that makes up American family life, representing a broad range of economic, geographic, racial, political, and socially diverse lifestyles.

Clicks Heard 'round the Nation
Participants will receive daily photo assignments on specific themes. You can contribute your own images via a series of daily snapshots taken at the same time by millions of people throughout the week, or just shoot general photos of what makes your home special whenever you wish.

Be A Part of American History
Immediately following the shoot week, a group of prestigious newspaper and magazine editors will review the millions of submissions and select the photos that best capture the spirit of home. The result? A coffee table book, a website and an exhibition.

Digital Makes It Easy
To upload your photos, HP's Snapfish is providing all participants with a free photo storage account that will enable the editors to review your images and contact you if your photos are selected for publication. Once you are registered, you will receive a daily email with each day's assignment.

Put Yourself on the Cover
Once the book has been edited and printed, you will be able to put your own photo in the cover. (Oprah Winfrey raved about our custom cover feature on her "Favorite Things" program.)

Thanks for being part of this close-up look at America at Home and good luck on your assignment!

I never do this, but it's on-topic.

After teaching an intro to dSLR class at my office, I decided to pull the information together and start a blog dedicated to learning the basics of exposure and other photography technical bits. I'm doing my best to present the material in an easy-to-understand fashion, and there are simple exercises you can do to try out what you've learned. It's geared toward dSLR shooters, but anyone who owns a camera with manual controls can folllow along.

In a slight cross post with the digital slr Tribe, wanted to let my friends in the digital photography Tribe know about a Lunar eclipse photo series I posted on the Nocturnes Tribe. This work is from the Full Eclipse that occurred early this last Tuesday morning. Here's a link:
http://nocturnes.tribe.net/

The Moon became very dark around the time of totality in the eclipse. It was actually hard to see in the sky, and even harder to frame in the camera: DARK, dark! I really needed the ISO 6400 capability to render color because of how dark the Moon was. One photo I posted here on the digital slr Tribe contains additional technical details about the photography setup, for those who may have interest:

Has anyone had luck with theses sensor cleaning kits? When I shoot above f8 I get a lot of dust halos in my images so I know I need to clean it - but how?

adobe lightroom library: trials with the trial version

i tried the trial version of both aperture and lightroom, and decided to go with aperture after an abysmal experience with adobe customer service.

My problem now is that I can't find all the images I had stored in the lightroom library. The trial version is expired and the only files I could find in my lightroom folder are backups that only open with lightroom.

did adobe lock up, hide or erase my images??!

Okay, so i've started to take my digital shooting a lil' more seriously.., and the first challenge i've come across is HOW DO I KEEP ALL OF THESE images (edited and originals.. surpassing the 1,000's every few months...) in some kind of helpful, orderly arrangement.... ???
Desperately seeking advice, tips, or philosophies......

I gather using a time based system is usually suggested..., but that doesn't seem descriptive enuff... I often can't be sure- months later- exactly WHEN i shot something....

Spots before my eyes

I was taking pictures with my point and shoot (Lumix TZ-3) the other night, and some of the pictures, that otherwise came out great, were ruined for me by spots. Ghostly type things, as near as I can tell.

I don't think it's a lens issue, as other pictures that evening don't have them. And, while I was shooting in "Night Portrait" mode (1/8 sec exposure, 2nd shutter flash), I've had good success with that. I don't think there's anything inherent in that mode.

My initial thoughts are: microscopic hand movements (or maybe the camera IS), the flash reflecting off of dust particles or maybe just random noise from the camera. Perhaps it's something paranormal, even, but I kinda doubt that.

Anyway, any ideas? I've put a picture up in the gallery illustrating what I'm talking about. Thanks.

Thank you to all the information everyone gave me on the Nikon D40x, I did go ahead and get it at costco. I also got a 4 gig sdhc card, which seems so far to hold many photo's before I need to download them into the laptop. I still need to get an additional battery. I went to Mt Lassen this week to visit family and here is a link to some of the photo's I had fun taking http://lisaannperry.myphotoalbum.com/albums.php So far I am really loving this camera. I think for my novice level of experience that this camera and the two lenses it came with will suit me well for a couple of years at least! I appreciate all the advice!

thanks,

Hi,
I am thinking about getting a Nikon D40X 10.2 MP, Costco has it for $970 it comes with two lens' anyone have one of these? If so what do you think about this camera? I am a novice and currently just have a little casio exlim which is great for quick shot etc, but without the lens it is limited on what you can do with it. I love taking pictures, scenery, flowrs, people, cars anything interesting.

Any thoughts are helpful!
thanks

I need to get photos out of an old version of iPhoto (version 4), and I'm looking for input on other photo database / cataloguing programs. Which programs do you prefer, and why?

The ability to tag a photo with multiple keywords is a very valuable function for me. Are there any programs that will import iPhoto keyword and film roll info? I have thousands of photos, so re-entering all of that info would be extremely time consuming.

Thanks!

inexpensive digital darkroom?

I don't have $2,500 laying around to go out and get the latest and greatest photoshop package, or even the $700 to upgrade if I had the previous version. I've been using paint shop pro since version 5 and now have the Corel version of it, X, which seems to handle almost everything I have needed to do. I've also got Helicon Filter, http://www.heliconsoft.com/heliconfilter.html which I find really works well not only for dealing with raw images, but also for delicate tweaking.

But I just finished reading most of a book called Skin, basically about getting the skin colors right in digital photographs. Naturally the only software talked about is photoshop. In the past, I've always been able to find the paint shop pro equivalent way of doing things talked about for photoshop people. But this time the part about getting the skin tone right relies on being able to determine both the RGB and CMYK values of various points on the skin. I don't think PSP will display those, I spent a couple of hours looking and can't find it anyway.

So, is there a less expensive alternative to photoshop that will allow me to see the CMYK values of a point?

Thanks,

Brandon

Digital Photo Class Question

I've just started a digital photography fundamentals class that I've been *really* looking forward to, and I was extremely disappointed to find out that they will be using Photoshop CS2, and not CS3.

I don't own CS2, just CS1 and CS3, and there are some things in CS3 I particularly want to learn to use.

My question is, if I go ahead and take this class anyways, will most of what I learn be readily transferable to CS3? Will I be able to easily pick up the changes on my own? Will I be able to figure out how to do things in CS3 from lectures about CS2, or are at least the basics too radically different?

I don't have a lot of Photoshop experience to start with, and the class is expensive, but I've really been dying to take it, so I'm just trying to decide if it's worth staying despite the use of old software, or if I'd be better off waiting until they upgrade, or finding somewhere else to take it, and getting my money back for this one. Everything else I know of around here for the summer is already too far along to join now, so odds are it would be a good long wait (for a variety of reasons), at least until fall or possibly next year, and I really want to get going on really learning what I'm doing with all of this. I do want to be sure I'll still be able to use it and not be throwing my money away learning old software that I can no longer obtain, or learning old ways of doing things that the new version has easier ways of doing.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

TIA.
Photoshop Elements 5 for Mac

Hey All,
Love my old Photoshop Elements but it didn't survive the transition to my new iMac and Macbook, both of whom run OSX 10.4. So I need to get a new version of PE. I see a PE5 for Windows but only PE4 for we lowly Appleheads. My question is this: When does PE5 come out for the Mac?

Nikon D80 Lens Recommendation?

I've got a D80 that I bought with a Tamron 18-300/3.5-6.3 lens, and I'm not at all happy with something with this setup because I'm getting a lot of blurry shots. I'm not entirely sure what the problem is, though, since I've never had a problem like this before. Mostly I think it's weight - the camera body and the lens together are just so heavy the whole assembly makes my wrists hurt, so I think I'm just not able to hold the whole thing still enough, especially in lower light situations.

It's very frustrating, but I think I think I may have just gotten too greedy about flexibility with a zoom, since I adore my Quantaray 28-200 on my N80 and have never had a blurring problem with that combination, so I'm thinking I may need to get a different lens or combination of lenses just to lighten things up a bit, but the question is what.

I'm on multiple waiting lists to try to get the Nikon 18-200 image stabilizing lens, but they are impossible to get, and really too expensive for me right now anyways at nearly $800, plus I hear they're quite heavy as well.

I like to shoot a pretty wide variety of subjects, ranging from portraits (mostly candid) to architectural details to interiors, to all sorts of other things. It's quite typical for me to bounce back and forth between relatively close up images to larger area shots like some landscapes, depending on a lot of factors. My focus is mostly fine art photography, and I'm really addicted to black & white, ambiguous images, light and shadow, reflections, and generally really moody/powerful/evocative kinds of subjects and perspectives. Since I'm an interior designer, though, I also really need to do accurate interiors that are not distorted, but still be able to capture as much of the room as possible. I also want to be able to do serious macro work, but that's receded in importance for now, and I already know what lens I want for that - the Nikon 105 one (I forget what it's called).

Because I like doing such a range of subjects and distances, I like the flexibility of having a zoom, but I've also found that I go out of my mind in lower light conditions because the lenses I have just aren't fast enough. I've got a 50mm/1.8 prime for my N80 and it's OK, but apparently I can't use it on the D80? I feel too constrained by it anyways, having gotten used to having the focal length flexibility of the zoom. I need to be able to shoot in at least average daylight indoors handheld, though, without a flash, and preferably in even lower light conditions. Did I mention that I am not fond of tripods, and really need the flexibility to shoot in as broad lighting conditions as possible handheld?

So, the question is, what other lenses or combinations of lenses would y'all recommend?

How to Choose a Tripod

OK, so what is it that makes a tripod be worth $600? What differentiates one from another? What should I be looking for, and how should I be evaluating what's right for me? Trying to get answers out of any camera store has thus far proven futile for some reason.

160 megapixel scanning back

Here's some links I found about a Seitz digital scanning back which can create 160 megapixel photos .(7500 x 21250 pixels).. generally panoramas in the 6x17cm format, although it also supports other formats as well. It does 16-bit A/D conversion, apparently with an 11-stop range.

Someone else can take pictures. Actually, it looked like there was a lot of photo-gear covering the race, there must be some pretty cool shots out there.
