Interesting article by a pro, discussing pro's & con's of different systems. I've x-posted this to a couple other relevant tribes.

Note that he's actually *used* all the stuff he talks about, not just "tested" it -- he doesn't seem to have any "brand loyalty" to speak of: he buys what helps him shoot in the way he wants to shoot (and therefore, his choices may not suit YOU in the way YOU want to shoot... ;-) . If he tries a new system and it helps him more than his old system, he moves to the new system. If it doesn't, he sticks with the old system.

Also, there's the caveat that (now we're shooting digital) cameras change really, REALLY fast; obsolescence (or at least, the frequent addition of new/desirable features) is a fact of life. So today's choices may be different tomorrow.

All of which he owns up-front. It's a good read, very interesting:
photography has always been a hobby of mine, but now that i'm getting better and poorer, i would like to start selling prints of my work. but one problem - i have no knowledge of printing services.

i want to begin my search online - does anyone have any recommendations for websites or online printing services for digital photographs?

i'm looking for something inexpensive (as in, not DeviantArt Print Shop), so that i can sell and profit from my work. i know of snapfish (through flickr), but from what i've seen the options are terribly limited.

Looking for a good film scanner. 35 mm. I don't need large format or slides. Quality over ease of use. I've been looking at the Primefilm PF7250U. Costco has it for a pretty good price.

Anyone have experience with the Primefilm scanners? The reviews I've seen are all over the place. I'm not looking at digitizing my entire film collection, but likely a few here and a few there. So while I'd rather have a high end Nikon or Minolta Dimage, those are not cost effective right now. Looking for best quality scans and edits (the PF comes with Digital ICE and I've seen it work - pretty good software). Easy to use would be nice, but I'm pretty adaptable.

I'm running a few OS, so if you've got something else let me know what OS you're running. I can install on XP Pro 64 bit, Vista Home Premium 32 bit and Win7 Pro.

Thanks,

I am new to the art, though I have a history of drawing, music, and poetry so I have the heart of a true artist and am yearing to learn as much as I can through photography. I am in the Navy and will be seperating in a month. I am starting school in Oct. at the Art Institute of Houston to pursue my degree in photography. I want to eventually have my own studio and I want to work National Geographic someday. I especially love nature and landscape photography. I look forward to sharing ideas and some of my work with everyone here and hope I can get some expert advise!

Here are some of my photo's I took while on leave from the navy. They were all taken with my sister's Rebel Xt. I now have my Rebel Xsi and will be posting some more pics (asa I get a hold of photoshop again) online for everyone to view. Comments are welcome please!

In consideration of members here, I'll only post this once. Not interested in spamming you guys. Here's the pitch...

I own a "matchmaking" service for photo buyers and photographers (www.stockphotorequest.com). Quite simply, I recruit photographers who pay me a yearly subscription fee which gives them access to my service.

How does StockPhotoRequest.com work?

As a subscriber, you receive emails with image requests from advertising and editorial Photo Buyers.

You can go to the site to upload images to one common light table per request. (Each uploaded image has links to your contact info next to it, so even if they don't use your image, you are advertising your work to your specific target market. You can see what other photographers are submitting as well and what the photo buyer has saved or deleted.)

Photo buyers contact you directly to license images. You pay NO commissions on sales.

You have your own Photographer Profile Page on the site, with a bio and portfolio of images. When we market our service to photo buyers we also market individual photographers.

Subscribers can upload, manage, and edit their personal images in our Searchable Image Collection (searchable by keywords you assign).

Photo buyers are able to search through images and license them directly from you. As with all your work at StockPhotoRequest.com, you keep 100% of your sales.

The standard annual subscription fee for individual photographers is $400.

That's it in a nutshell. Some of my registered buyers include: National Geographic Adventure Magazine, People Magazine, Islands Magazine, Orion Magazine, Backpacker magazine and many others. Presently I have 800+ buyers, and I'm recruiting new buyers all the time (they use my service for free).

Have a look at the site: www.stockphotorequest.com

You can also check out this SPR video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbAu1EvnG4s

I'm happy to answer any questions.

Thanks,

I've seen a variety of software packages out there ranging from Photoshop plug-ins to full stand-alone programs. So when you have to crank up the ISO, what do you use to fix the noise? Noise Ninja, DXO, others? What are the pros and cons of these (and other) programs/plug-ins? What's the best bang for the buck when you can't lower the ISO?

BUT but but but... is it ok to USE these manual lenses on a digital camera? the camera body has - what are they called - sensors that are made to connect to sensors on an af lens, and manual lenses don't have these. i'm worried that the manual lenses might scratch up or otherwise destroy the sensors on the camera body during attachment and removal. does anyone have insight into this?

does anyone know if you can do infrared on nikon dlsrs? particularly, the d90?

i know nothing about the techno. aspects of IR photography, but really want to do some of it. i was reading a bit on it and apparently, even though digital sensors are by default sensitive to infrared light, many manufacturers put an infrared blocker in front of the sensor (IR penetrates through clothing..). i read this in the confusing Wiki article, which mentions CCD sensors..i wasn't sure if this applies to CMOS sensors as well, which is what nikon has (please pardon my overall ignorances about sensors and camera technology in general).

so my question here is, does nikon block IR, and if so, how can i remove the blocker?

and of course, how do i go about IR photography at all? what i gather, is first i have to make sure that the sensor is able to receive IR (removing blocker if needed). after that, i need to put an IR filter on my lens. am i ready to go or did i forget something?

please share any known issues. i know that film cameras/older lenses focus on IR differently than visible light, but according to same Wiki article, newer lenses can use AF or visible light focusing because they are better equipped to focus on near-IR wavelengths. is this true? or do i have to keep something in mind while focusing?

any other suggestions or comments on the issue? thanks so much!

Another problem i see when there are mirrors on all the walls and an artist is performing in the middle of the room because of flash reflection pictures get darker when i take on auto or "P" setting.
The NYPD Harasses a Photographer at Coney Island
-------------------------------------------
Runnin' Scared
The NYPD Harasses a Photographer at Coney Island
It's not the first case of illegal censorship by a department that says "shoot first, hand over film later"
by Sean Gardiner
June 10th, 2008 12:00 AM

Manhattan commercial photographer Simon Lund loves Coney Island so much that he treks out there 10 to 20 times each summer to take pictures. But it was only on his latest venture that Lund encountered something he'd never experienced in all his trips there over the years: an unwanted photo editor from the NYPD.

As if he were in a police state, Lund was intimidated by a cop into giving up his film, even though he was doing nothing wrong and wasn't formally accused of anything.

The upshot is that "the police had no right to get involved—none," says Todd Maisel, vice president of the New York Press Photographers Association.

Under the law, Lund was allowed to take a photo of anyone in public. If he intended to use the picture commercially, he'd have to get a signed release.

Maisel, a shooter for the Daily News, says news photogs get into occasional scrapes with police, but most know never to give up their film. However, he says he can see how a commercial photographer might be more easily intimidated by the NYPD.

NYPD officials declined to comment for this story, but several allegations of the cops' heavy-handed behavior toward photographers have been documented. The NYCLU has filed several lawsuits against the NYPD, accusing them of violating First Amendment rights in its harassment of photographers. One of the suits, Sharma v. NYPD, was filed in January 2006, when Indian filmmaker Rakesh Sharma, who was shooting taxis in midtown, was stopped by police and detained for several hours, during which he was quizzed about "terrorist" activities. That August, the suit was expanded at the NYCLU's request to include a slew of photographers.

"Photographers and filmmakers have been unlawfully detained, searched, and threatened with arrest if they would not disclose or destroy their film," the Sharma suit contends, adding that the harassment, ominously, doesn't always end there. "Photographers have also been subjected to a second round of questioning by members of the NYPD's Intelligence Division," the suit alleges.

The department also may be keeping close track of which photographers it harasses. The suit accuses the NYPD of maintaining a database that includes the identities of everyone "investigated for photography . . . regardless of the outcome of the investigation."

If that's the case, then Simon Lund is on the list.

His troubles started when he was with his wife, Jano, clicking away at Coney Island on Memorial Day. A woman approached him and accused him of taking pictures of her young son. Lund says that if he did, he was unaware of it; he recalls that he was shooting the rides. In any event, Lund knew that it's legal to take pictures of people, even kids, in public. (For later commercial use, photographers have to get releases from the children's parents.)

The woman told him to accompany her while she found a cop. She insisted that Lund erase the picture, but Lund was using a film camera, not a digital one, and thus couldn't erase individual shots. Nevertheless, he says, he willingly followed her over to a group of police officers congregating on the boardwalk. "I just wanted to sort it out, because I knew it was fine to take pictures in public," he says.

A cop whom Lund couldn't fully identify, however, didn't see it that way. Lund says the cop asked him and his wife if they had children. When they said no, the officer said: "If you did, you'd understand why she is so upset." The woman was joined by other family members, and soon they were all yelling at the police to make Lund hand over his film.

"It was starting to get uglier and uglier," says Lund. "The mother of the child was getting really hostile: 'Why isn't he destroying it? How can he take pictures of my child?' "

Lund says the cop then leaned over to him and said: "You should destroy your film right now, or give it to her. You've got to give up your film, or things are going to get much worse for you."

"I knew at that point I could fight it," says Lund. "I knew I was right." But he recalls that he didn't want to find out what the cop meant by things getting "much worse for you."

So he gave the film and a business card to a friend of the woman's. "The cop didn't exactly say, 'I'm going to take you to jail,' " says Lund, "but basically, he didn't leave me any other choice."

Lund asked that the woman develop the photos, remove any pictures of her son, and please return the rest of the photographs to him. He hasn't heard from her since. He says he plans to file a complaint with the Civilian Complaint Review Board.

"We're quite confident that the NYPD has told its police officers, in one way or another, that they should be paying very, very close attention to photographers," says Christopher Dunn, the NYCLU's associate legal director. "But they haven't been given clear directions on the limits in which they have to conduct those investigations. Police officers are not allowed to look at images without consent of the photographer, and they have no authority to order someone to let them look at their pictures or to confiscate their film. And it happens all the time."

Officials at the CCRB and the NYCLU say that complaints about the police approaching people taking pictures and either demanding to see their photos or seizing and destroying them have been on the rise ever since 9/11.

Dunn says this particular case offers the "wrinkle" of Lund willingly approaching the cops instead of the cops approaching him. "But the outcome is the same," he adds: "Someone's film is disappearing."

I used to do photography for a small weekly newspaper, and I've been wanting to get my own set up for a while now. More for my own enjoyment than anything.

I already know what I want. A Canon Rebel. Now I'm just trying to find the best price.

I figured a new camera with two decent lenses, an 18-55 and 75-300, decent flash, 8 gig memory card, and an extra battery would cost me around $1,500. But I went on Ebay and found a set-up for $900.

The flash looks kinda cheap, but everything else seems good.

The package is here: http://cgi.ebay.com/CANON-EOS-Digital-Rebel-XTi-400D-3-LENS-8GB-FREE-SHIP_W0QQitemZ110258426743QQihZ001QQcategoryZ147173QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153.l1262

Anyone care to take a quick look and let me know what they think?

I'd also like to hear from anyone who's used Ebay for this. I've bought a few things off Ebay, but I'm a bit leery to purchase an expensive SLR off of it. Maybe it's just nerves though, my girlfriend's dad bought a mustang on the Internet and it's in great condition.

Cropping it was easy enough, but I couldn't figure out how to re-size the larger image down to 100x100. The menu marked resize never gave me a pixel option, and never affected the image as it appeared on the screen - I suspect it was only referring to the printed image.

I finally went back to the Photoshop 5 LE that I still have, and resized it in approximately 3 seconds.

In any case, was this a case of the 3am stupids? Or is what I'm trying to do either not possible in Elements - or just hidden well?

I had one kid at the Apple store tell me that yes, my prints would be 'duller/darker' than the glossy screen. But the another kid working there said that the matte screens make the pics look duller, and therefore the prints would come out 'brighter'. Anyone have any first had experience using Photoshop and printing from these glossy monitors?

My old Olympus had a standard leather strap, and I also would use a chest harness. I was supremely confident that it was safe. Never dropped it. The new cam has a single strap mount on the side, and the strap is a nylon chord with a tinier little loop that goes thru the mount. Makes me nervous. Just how safe is this kind of strap-mount? Is there something that I can do, to make it safer? Thanks, Marc.

I do club/event photogography and generate 1100-1500 photos in a night, so batch processing is a must. I just found Gary Fong's Bullzey 4 software and it seems like the ticket, but I would like more info. Is there any other software packages out there that do the basics? Anybody have experience with Bullzey?
In the digital, my 1st importance would be (I believe it's called) "aperture priority." I'm not ready to spend $800-$1000 on an SLR, but I want to be able to take good pics. I could start right now up to $300-$400, though I wouldn't object to paying less. I'm about to hit a few stores to get some hands on, and it would help if I new what to look for.
My work is featured in this awesome book, Buy yours today $45 +tax SH from www.joemangrum.com and get a signed copy (personalized if you include your name etc. Its a very timely topic , climate change, funny how nobody is asking about it to our presidential hopefuls??
lets get the word out on climate change!

heres the details

In the environmental realm, science and art are inextricably linked. While science determines how we measure the health of our planet, art allows us to visualize our relationship to the natural world. Art in Action collects creative interpretations of the state of out planet in word and image by seventy-nine artists. These varied pieces express a profound appreciation for all species and landscapes, explore our natural world lost, despaired and reconstructed and describe the fantasy of paradises anew and gone awry.

From the expansive vision of Christo to the enlightened power of Olafur Eliasson, the art speaks to us in as many ways as there are artists. Each chapter asks us to celebrate, reflect, interact, protect and act, demonstrating the vast and rich web of life and the interconnectedness of it all. No book can change the natural world. But these stories and photographs can build awareness, the first critical step in changing our collective story from one that exploits and destroys nature for the benefit of humankind to one that nurtures and values the natural world.

Mia Hanak is the Founding Executive Director of the Natural World Museum, an organization committed to inspiring sustainable culture through the arts in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). She leads the team that produces the innovative Art for the Environment global exhibition series. She has been nominated by the American Association of Museums as a ?Museum Leader for the Next Generation.? She currently resides in San Francisco.

Randy Rosenberg is an artist and has also curated many art collections for international organizations including The World Bank, the International Finance Corporation and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Her traveling exhibitions include: The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama and Envisioning Change; Attitudinal and Climate.

PHOTOGRAPHERS--STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS!

READ THIS:
Fees proposed for photographing public lands:
www.seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/...3.html

AND THEN READ THIS:

Photographers did nothing while, local and state beaches, and cities, decided
to write new ordinances that made photographers cash-cows to the government.
I suggest photographers do something now, before it's too late.

Problem:
Define "commercial". By letting local landmanagers be responsible for implementation and enforcement, there will
be mistakes, over-zelous rangers citing people when they probably shouldn’t–it happens. I liken this to what
happend at local state and city beaches, if the rangers or officers catch someone with a really nice camera they
will probably ask you to leave or cite you. They just can’t tell who is who when it comes to photography. With the
advent of cheap digital SLRs, just about everyone looks like a professional. What really sucks is the fees, they
will be straight across the board expensive, and have insurance requirements too. So wether you are a newbie
wanting to take a picture to sell a few postcards at the local gift shop or wanting to do stock photography (with
no guarantee of income), it will COST YOU…. Even if it’s personal, you will get hassled, because you look
“professional.”

The photo-journalist are worried about how it affects their news reporting of non-breaking news. I think that
freelance photographers and advanced hobbyists should be the ones really worrried–they are the biggest cash cow,
because there are more of them.

I would suggest everyone that has a camera voice out against permit requirements for photography. It simply does
not require the large crews that the film industry requires and all the strings attached to it. Photography permits
are just a cash cow to the government, and it’s time ALL photographers voice out against being victimized by our
government. We are NOT wallets to be tapped at whim. Some suggest we be taxed reasonably like fisherman or hunters.
But even that is soooo ridiculous, we are being taxed for photographing nature, without exhausting its resources.
It is a sad, sad day when we are nothing more than wallets to our government.

Voice out, you can write to the department of interior individually or as a group…
www.doi.gov/contact.html

DO SOMETHING…

Fact:
Anyone who enters a national park is already paying an entrance fee.

City beaches already have photography permit requirements in the tripple digits, as well as
insurace requirements in the million dollar category. The same thing can be expected to happen now at National
parks unless photographers unite and do something.

This basically walls out small and independent shooters from
even attempting anything entrepreneurial. (commentary: I guess only rich people can have their portraits taken at
the beach by rich photographers--so much for equality).

What I've been finding is that my one-time prefence for monochrome over color has completely shifted with digital. Do others on here also find the same thing? That digital color has added so much that the desire for Black and white images have faded? Have you noticed the same thing happening to you?

Not that I have anything against Apple, but they tend to be at the higher end of the price spectrum, and I'm not sure if I need all that it comes with.
Mostly I print my digital photos at work, $65,000 laser printer...
but I want to get some real photographs this time.
I want to get some large size prints as well.

How does it work?
Can you recommend a good place?

What's the deal with sizing for prints?
Is the rule never go bigger than the size the original photo was taken in?
My camera saves everything in 72 dpi, can I switch it 300 dpi and go smaller for a print?

Hey experts, tell me stuff.
Thanks!
